Description: Last year marked the first ever Live on the Lawn Independence Day Celebration at Rutherfurd Hall since opening as a cultural center in 2011. This event was met with remarkable popularity, and the immediate and surrounding communities loved it. Because it is not like other fireworks displays in Warren County! We like to call it the “Kentucky Derby of fireworks.” It is a classy event, with vast lawns in the shadows of the historic mansion and sweeping down to Allamuchy Pond at the edge of Allamuchy Mountain State Park. More like Tanglewood than parking lot Live on the Lawn is an event for you to invite your friends & family, pack a cooler and blankets, and head out for the evening! The fireworks are unique and high end, and the live music, again provided by Uncle Shoehorn and others, will surely get you in the summer spirit. There will be burgers and ice cream as well as water on sale, some activities for the kids, art & history exhibits, and great roaming live entertainment!

Description: The Lake Mohawk Country Club will stage its annual fireworks display on Friday, July 4, 2014 over Lake Mohawk in Sparta. I have been trying to get to their fireworks display for years because I know it will make for stunning photographs. Sparta is one of my favorite places in New Jersey and one of the most beautiful spots in the region. The day begins with a 4th of July parade at 10:00 a.m. sponsored by the Sparta Elks.

This weekend two historic villages are open to the public Waterloo Village and Millbrook Village will be holding events.  The Sterling Hill Mine will host a mineral gathering and  the Lafayette Preservation Foundation will host a tea and the Miss Lafayette Pagent.

Waterloo Canal Day

Date: Saturday June 28 2014 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm
Description: Eight building will be open to the public with demonstrations of early trades and crafts. There will be canal rides and Hoboken 9 Vintage Baseball Club will be play baseball  using the 1845 rules of the game.

Old Fashion Independence Day Celebration Millbrook Village

Locations:  Millbrook Village is located in the Delaware Water Gap NRA, a vast U.S. National Park Service resource located of on both sides of the Delaware River between Matamoras, PA and Belvidere, NJ. Millbrook is a re-creation of a turn-of-the-century village. Together with the U.S. National Park Service, the Millwork Village Society works to show the way of life of a typical village during the 1850-1900 time
Description: Celebrate the Two Hundred Thirty eighth Anniversary of our independence at the tenth annual Independence Day Celebration at Millbrook Village.Join the townsfolk in the parade down Main Street at one o’clock and gather at the green in front of the general store for a patriotic speech given by one of our local celebrities. Make a hat and a flag, bring your tin whistle or drum, wear you patriotic clothes and enjoy yourself. Got an instrument? Bring it along and help liven things up.Enter the water melon eating contest after the parade for some refreshing fun. Everyone is invited to the frolic; kids of all ages are welcome! There will be lots of things going on throughout the village all day. Old time games for the kids and tours of the village and demonstrations all around town. You’ll find it fun and interesting.Bring a picnic lunch and relax in the shade for a spell. Meet a new friend, learn about our history and take in the experience of a quieter time.The event is presented by the Millbrook Village Society in cooperation with the National Park Service. Mineral Collecting at Sterling Hill (daytime only)

Location: Sterling Hill Mining Museum, Ogdensburg, NJ
Description:
Collecting is allowed on the Mine Run dump and in the Passaic pit  and “saddle” areas.  This event is open to the public.  Bring sturdy footwear, a strong hammer (carpenter’s claw hammers not allowed), and eye protection.  A dark room with a shortwave ultraviolet light is provided on-site for inspection of fluorescent minerals. Fees: $5 admission plus $1.50 per pound for any minerals taken. Fee does NOT include mine tour.
Age Requirements: 7 years & up on the Mine Run dump; 13 & up elsewhere

The Board of Trustees of the County Community College will meet

on Monday, June 23rd

demolition of this historic building as they have been pushing to have the

mansion taken down as soon as possible. Despite the fact that the college

has stated publicly that they are short of funds, they are bent on spending a

large sum of money to wipe the mansion off the face of the map. The cost

estimate prepared by the college’s engineer called for allocating $ 175,000

for the demolition. In a recent newspaper article college President Mazur

said that they anticipated $250,000 to $300,000 to be the figure from the

bids to be submitted. It is apparent that the college is trying to ramp up the

figures in anticipation of high bid numbers.

The Newton Town Council will be meeting on Monday, June 23 at 7:00

PM at the Newton Municipal Building – 39 Trinity Street. Early in the

meeting the Council will be holding the second hearing on the ordinance

to deny the Horton Mansion the protection that the local designation

of a site as a historic building would afford it. This effort to derail the

unanimous recommendation of the Town Historic Preservation Commission

to designate the Horton Mansion is being lead by Mayor Joseph Ricciardo,

with the support of two other members of the Council. Deputy Mayor Kevin

Elvidge and Councilwoman Sandy Diglio strongly support the designation

of the mansion.

Your attendance at both meetings is critical to try and prevent the waste

of taxpayers money and the demolition of this significant historic structure.

We cannot permit the College and the Newton Town Council to rob the

public of yet another part of our past – our heritage. Lend a hand and

come out to the meetings and speak up. Let your voice be heard !

Newton Day  June 14, 2014

Spring Street, Newton, NJ

The Town of Newton is celebrating its 150th legislature in 1864, the Township of Newton was divided so as to create the Town of Newton and the Townships of Hampton and Andover. At that time, Andover Township also included all of present-day  Andover Borough.

This year, the main celebration festivities for the 150th 14th , as a part of the traditional Newton Day activities, which is hosted annually by the Greater NewtonChamber of Commerce. The main activities will take place on Spring Street between 11:00 AM and 4:30PM, and then move down to Memory Park for the evening program to run until 9:30 PM.

Directly across Main Street from the classic car display, the Sussex County Historical Society will be open to visitors from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Society’s museum is located at 82 Main Street, at the corner of Main and Church Streets.

At 4:30 PM, the activities of the day will be shift from Spring Street down to Memory Park. There, an antique car exhibit will be available to spectators, and a baseball game will take place between the firemen of Newton and Andover Township. There will be more presentations made by the Town Criers about the history of the community. The will also be two bands providing music and many activities for children at that time as well.

The evening will be capped off with an enormous fireworks display. The pyrotechnic display will begin after sunset, around 9:00 PM.
